Refer
to the Power Standards for specific information regarding the first grade
curriculum. |
|
Illinois
and District 112 have learning standards for every child. Our
class differentiates learning for the individual student whether s/he needs additional support or enrichment. |
|
Reading |
![]() |
During
our literacy center time students will participate in guided reading
groups. Your child will be assessed at several points during the
school year to determine appropriate groupings. Students will
work on a variety of reading skills with peers with a similar
reading ability. The groups may change throughout the school year. |
|
Writing |
|
Students
will practice writing skills through a variety of activities.
They will be expected to write in a journal and a writing book
regularly. Students must be able to generate their own ideas AND
write on topic when given a prompt in first grade. Student journals
are a used for free writing, where the student determines the
topic for each entry. Use this sheet to record some topics your child can write about and return it
to school. This way your child will have a list of ideas to refer
to on hand. Students are given prompts in their writing books.
They will "brainstorm" on a topic and then organize
their writing. Organization, supporting details and elaboration
within writing will be developed during the school year. As the
students become familiar with each organizer we use, it will become
part of their homework. |
|
| Spelling | ![]() |
| A
spelling inventory will be taken at different points throughout the
year to determine each student's spelling needs. Students will be
given spelling lists according to their individual level. Therefore,
students within our class (and first grade) may have different spelling
words from one another. Spelling tests will be taken on Fridays
and new lists will be sent home. Our class takes spelling tests on the computers in the lab. This will take some time to get use to, but it is a good way to develop beginning computer skills. The students print their tests through Spelling City; practicing this process at home is a great idea! |
|
| Math | |
Please
refer to the Power Standards for each topic covered in math for first grade.
Our class learns hands-on in math, using manipulatives and games
to practice skills. The students also discuss logic and reasoning
during these games. Basic skill practice and some of our class
games will be included in your child's homework each week. Check
our LINKS page for intereactive games
online covering first grade math skills. |

Science and Social Studies |
![]() |
Again,
please refer to the Power Standards for each topic covered in social studies and science
for first grade. The first grade team works together to teach
all first grade students for science and social studies. The students
are mixed into groups with other students from each first grade
class. The groups are rearranged during the year. This gives your
child an opportunity to get to know every student in first grade.
The groups rotate to both social studies and science twice a week.

Partners in Learning |
|
Lincoln
School's staff and students participate in a "Partners in
Learning" time every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Students
are grouped together based on intervention support or enrichment
needs. The students may be "partnered" with a classroom
teacher or other Lincoln staff member. Students are monitored
for progress and assessed regularly. "Partners" groups
will change throughout the school year. The number of students
and available staff members effect the groupings. |

| Technology | ![]() |
| Students will spend the year learning to use iPads, desktop and laptop computers. They will practice powering on, shutting down, logging off, mouse skills, typing with a keyboard, using web browsers, reading and sending emails, printing files, etc. Please have your child practice using these skills at home too.
